Tom Skinner asked me to help provide him tubular race wheels for the 2012 cyclocross race season. Tom will be riding a new Norco Threshold Disc cross bike. Tom has not ridden tubulars yet, but he’s heard they are the way to go for cross (I concur). This is the first disc CrossRockAX niobium tubular wheelset I’ve built. I went with the same Taiwanese supplier for hubs as I normally do with my CrossRockAX, but at the moment that meant a 28 holes front and back setup with cross-3 lacing all around. At 1585grams for the set, they are pretty light for disc wheels. I used my normal Sapim Laser 2.0/1.5/2.0mm butted spokes front, cross 2 lacing to accompany the disc configuration. The rear wheel was laced with Wheelsmith DB-14 2.0/1.7/2.0 butted spokes all around with cross-three both sides and alloy nipples throughout. This wheelset debuts the 2012 decal set for that speedy look. Retail price is yet to be determined, but will likely be in the $500 to $550 range. For Tom, his sponsorship deal left most of that money in his pocket.

Watch for Tom Skinner racing the COTR Island race series, provincial and national cross races on the wet coast.
